CARDENAS CARRION, Blanca María. A home-made museum: The University Museum of Anthropology in contemporary museology. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2020, vol.27, n.77, pp.227-250.  Epub 24-Mar-2021. ISSN 2448-8488.

The University Museum of Anthropology (MUA in Spanish) debuted on November 12, 1979, on the Humanities Tower II’s ground floor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This simple, home-made yet complex museum opened its doors to university-wide participation to provide tools to address students -our future professionals- to better understand anthropological research and promote cultural heritage conservation. While brief in duration, MUA´s history concurred with analytical museology’s development with themes and concepts still subject to debate in contemporary museums. This article compares Anthony Shelton’s epistemic positions and methodological interdictions for Critical Museology, with analytical content current university museums content and substance. A brief historical tour of the MUA’s formative years and inception (1979-1985) centers on cutting-edge conceptual planning that reflects similar core essence programs employed in contemporary museology today.
