This article deals with the construction of the figure of the priest José María Mercado as a hero of the Independence through three moments or stages in the life of the priest Mercado narrated by different authors after the insurgent uprising in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: his birth, the transfer of the artillery and his death. Rescuing several of the collective enunciations in the nineteenth and twentieth century press as a proof of the circulation and variations that his participation in the independent movement in the Mexican Republic has had.
