HADATTY MORA, Yanna. Realismo y vanguardia en Barro de la sierra de Jorge Icaza. Valenciana [online]. 2010, vol.3, n.6, pp.53-68. ISSN 2007-2538.
Barro de la sierra, a collection of six tales, is the first prose work of Ecuadorian writer Jorge Icaza. It appeared in 1933 and, for quite a long time, was a rare book even in libraries. In 1971, the author “se- 54 parated” the collection when he spoke of “Interpretación” and “Mala pata” as psychoanalytical stories that had little connection with the rest of the tales. That statement of Icaza justifies an interpretation of Barro de la sierra as a book clearly organized in two parts: urban and rural tales. Especially the rural stories need to be revaluated, as they reflect a dichotomy detectable in the whole of Ecuadorian literature between rural “indigenismo” and urban narrative. At the same time, both tendencies reflect a stylistic rupture that makes relative the differentiation between realistic and vanguardista writing models.
