ESPARZA OLMOS, María Daniela e LOPEZ OLMOS, Rafael. Income profile of students who showed good academic performance in the first year of studies: The case of the School of Design from the Universidad De La Salle Bajío. Nova scientia [online]. 2011, vol.3, n.6, pp.95-120. ISSN 2007-0705.
Introduction: The Universities educational system has faced several challenges in the recent years, such changes have forced us to establish new admission policies that allow us to select the students who really meet the admission required profile, conducting us to create the correct strategies to improve their academic performance throughout their academic years, and in this way, to higher the terminal efficiency grades. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to characterize the admission profile of students who had good academic performance in the first year studying their major degree in the areas of: Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Environmental Design and Fashion and Footwear Design at De La Salle Bajio University. Method: The final distribution of the sample was formed by 256 students of both genders, female and male students, and we statistically analyzed the results of their admission exam process of the cohorts from 2005 to 2008, and later on compare them with their grades average in the first year studying their major degree. Results: The results showed similarities and differences among the four areas of study, in respect to the general admission profile at the School of Design. We also found that students, who applied in the period of "excellence", achieved better academic performance in their first year at the university. Conclusion: Knowing and being aware of the admission profile, we have a parameter in the following admission procedures, which allows us to establish the exact strategies to strengthen the skills and abilities of admitted students to the university, in such a way that will higher the grades of terminal efficiency and in that approach improve the quality of undergraduate Academic Programs at the Design School.
