This article reviews and discusses three key concepts -the indigenous, ethnicity and indigenousness- as elements of the recognition process that indigenous groups in Mexico have traversed. This process is traced, specifically, from the moment when neoliberalism was established as the form of government, and analyzes the recognition policies that the mexican State has implemented along the way.
