CRIADO, María Jesús. Derechos ciudadanos y migración en perspectiva comparada: Tendencias y cambios recientes. Migr. Inter [online]. 2008, vol.4, n.4, pp.173-208. ISSN 2594-0279.

Over the last few years, the pair immigration/citizenship has become a focal point of controversy and debate. The evolution of this process in its different manifestations has shown the limits and inadequacies of this figure in the face of new contexts and strains its characterization and principles. The debates on the character and limits of citizenship (both as a category and as a social body), the systems and regulations of attribution and acquisition, its conditions and implications, the contrast between rights and duties, the extension of its prerogatives beyond traditional boundaries and the successive changes in the regulations, which have been abundant in recent years, are sufficiently explicit indications of the tensions in this area. This process does not only affect the countries of destination, but, unlike other migrations, spreads to the countries of origin, incorporating a new dimension that has implications for both of them. This text examines these questions from a comparative perspective and notes the principal trends and their implications.
