In this paper, the author, taking a critical approach, explores some of the most significant contributions of the so-called dependency theory, as well as its theoretical validity and potential to explain certain features of present day capitalism. The thread of this analysis is the well-known debate between Fernando Henrique Cardoso, José Serra and Ruy Mauro Marini, which is not only one of the most valuable discussions, but also allows to explore the political and theoretical movement of dependentist thesis throughout the ideas of alternative development and democratization.
