This paper analyzes the origin and development of coffee-growing cooperatives in Huatusco, Veracruz (Mexico) during the first seventeen years of the 21st century. Our research focuses on the different ways cooperatives get started and their links to rural-development public agencies that operate in Veracruz. Our research allows us to update an overview of cooperative membership and prepare a typology of cooperatives according to their independence vis-à-vis different stakeholders.
