Introduction:

gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors, they can occur anywhere in the digestive tract.

Objective:

to present the experience of 10 years in the Oncology Unit of the General Hospital of Puebla “Dr. Eduardo Vázquez Navarro” in the management of patients diagnosed with Gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Material and methods:

longitudinal, retrospective, observational and clinical study carried out in patients with a histopathological diagnosis of Gastrointestinal stromal tumors between the months of January 2012 to December 2022 in the Oncology Unit of the General Hospital of Puebla.

Discussion:

24 records of patients with a diagnosis of Gastrointestinal stromal tumors tumor were reviewed. An institutional incidence of 2% was found. The average age at diagnosis was 53 years, with a male predominance. Surgical treatment was performed in 96% of the cases. A 5-year survival of 16% was found. Recurrence occurred in 16% to liver and lung.

Conclusions:

gastrointestinal stromal tumors have an unpredictable behavior. Surgery in early stages is the curative treatment. Its indolent presentation makes its diagnosis difficult until advanced stages of the disease. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors have improved survival and are a therapeutic option in cases where surgery is not possible.
