JIMENEZ-DE ALBA, Marcela e TORRES-MALDONADO, Arely Seir. Effect of audiovisual educational intervention on preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing surgical-anesthetic procedures. Rev. mex. anestesiol. [online]. 2023, vol.46, n.3, pp.168-172. Epub 08-Set-2023. ISSN 0484-7903. https://doi.org/10.35366/111071.
Introduction:
it has been reported that the patient scheduled for surgery-anesthesia presents anxiety, and that this anxiety is associated with a worse post-operative evolution.
Objective:
to evaluate the effect of an audiovisual educational intervention on the preoperative anxiety of patients undergoing surgical-anesthetic procedures.
Material and methods:
a randomized clinical trial was conducted in patients scheduled for surgical-anesthetic procedures, who were assigned to the audiovisual information group (IA, n = 39) or to the conventional information group (CI, n = 29) after they signed informed consent. The effect of the audiovisual intervention on the APAIS and STAI scores was evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS v.26. A value of p < 0.05 was considered significant.
Results:
both groups were similar in age, sex, ASA classification and type of anesthesia. The mean APAIS scores were 18.3 ± 6.1 in the IC group and 16.6 ± 7.3 in the IA group (p = 0.326). The mean STAI-S score was 24.0 ± 5.4 points in the CI group and 34.9 ± 3.2 in the IA group (p < 0.001), and the mean STAI-T score was 27.1 ± 2.1 in the CI group and 28.6 ± 2.6 in the CI group. group IA (p = 0.013).
Conclusions:
the audiovisual educational intervention significantly increases the level of anxiety of patients undergoing surgical-anesthetic procedures.
