SILVA, Antonio; DIAZ-IGLESIAS, Eugenio  e  SERRANO-FLORES, Etelberto D.. Oxygen consumption of phyllosoma-1 larvae of the red spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus), in variable temperatures and salinities under light and darkness conditions. Hidrobiológica [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.3, pp.303-312. ISSN 0188-8897.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the immediate responses of Panulirus interruptus phyllosoma larvae one day after hatching in regard to QO2 (µl O2 mg-1 h-1), in response to the combined variation of temperature (11,17, 22, 27 and 31 °C) and salinity (22, 28, 33.5 and 42 ups), in conditions of light and darkness. Their oxygen consumption was measured with polarographic equipment in closed chambers. A three-way ANOVA was applied to the data, and a highly significant (p < 0.001) effect was found in regard to temperature, salinity and light-darkness, on the QO2 of the larvae. The interaction between temperature and salinity was highly significant (p < 0.001); between temperature and light-darkness was not significant (p = 0.697); between salinity and light-darkness was significant (p = 0.016). The data were graphed as a response surface. The value for QO2 in hatching conditions (22 °C and 33.5 ups) was 1.8 and 3.7 times greater with respect to 11 °C and 33.5 ups and 11 °C and 42 ups respectively. The values for QO2 fluctuated between 0.12 and 0.86 µl O2 mg-1h-1; the values for Q10 between 1.04 and 3.34. The larvae phyllosoma-1 displayed an ability to compensate their QO2 in temperature and salinity conditions lower than those for hatching (22 °C and 33.5 ups). The results of this investigation are considered essential in continuing research regarding the culture of Panulirus interruptus larvae.
