A historical analysis is used to review the case of a Mam indigenous community in the Sierra-Soconusco region of the Mexican state of Chiapas. In this region, the local coffee-based agricultural economy has maintained permanent ties with labor migration to coffee estates, which has helped the emergence of unequal regional development. This article analyzes how the process of social change - involving coffee cultivation, migration out of the region, and public works projects - have had an impact on the capitalization of domestic groups and the community, and on the situation of women.
