CUNIN, Elisabeth. "In Chetumal we are not rastas but we like reggae": Afro-Caribbean music in the border between Mexico and Belize. Alteridades [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.43, pp.79-94. ISSN 2448-850X.
Hierba Santa, Chan Santa Roots, Korto Circuito, Roots and Wisdom, Santos Santiagos and Skuadrón 16 are some of the reggae and ska groups in the music scene in Quintana Roo. We tend to associate southeast Mexico with the dominant Mayan culture or the first mixture of native indians and Europeans. i am interested in the afro-Caribbean music as a mean to study the socio-historical mechanisms of acceptance, transformation andforgetting differences. analyzing the cultural arena linked to reggae and ska, i will try to understand what the presence of black music means in the absence of black people. is this an expression of a global circulation of afro-Caribbean cultural trends as symbols of belonging and difference among urban youngsters? Does it take us back to the history of Quintana Roo as a Caribbean region and the Black Atlantic? is it a form of revision of Mexican national ethnic mixture and inclusion of other population groups?
