Obesity is the most important environmental risk factor of diabetes mellitus type 2 and may be found in 90% of patients. Bariatric surgery, also known as metabolic surgery, is each more recognized as one of the most efficient interventions against obesity and comorbidities, helping patients to reach the sustainable weight loss and to improve their general health. This article reviews the different types of bariatric surgery, as well as its impact on glycemic control and on the remission of diabetes mellitus type 2.
