One of the causes for the outbreak of both slave wars in Sicily, as well as Spartacus’ revolt, was precisely the lack of fear among the freemen and the states where the slaves lived and, in order to defeat them, it was necessary to acknowledge the terror that the insurgents deservedly inspired.
