This paper presents an overview of empirical research on the lex mercatoria. Existing studies, however, are still too scarce to be capable of provid ing a complete or coherent picture. Taking into account that the global economy is organized around sectors and networks, the paper proposesto setect branches of trade or industries as an object of empirical study. This approach focuses on the processes of norm creation, the mechanisms for the stabilization of expectations within particular social systems, as well as on the structural consequences of this type of self-regutation for both global law and national legal systems.
