Resumen

HERNANDEZ-RODRIGUEZ, Clemente  y  JAVIER LLAMAS-RODRIGUEZ, Francisco. Food waste and time available for domestic chores. Are they correlated? Exploratory study in an urban context. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.56, e201036.  Epub 06-Dic-2021. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.30i56.1036.

Objective:

This research addresses toward a possible cause of food loss and waste, under the perspective of the circular economy that had not been analyzed before the lack of availability of families to carry out domestic work.

Methodology:

In this exploratory study, we chose a descriptive qualitative approach, with the aim of analyzing the correlation between the available time to carry out domestic chores and food waste. In order to collect data a survey was carried out of a sample of households in a middle-class neighborhood in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Subsequently, a descriptive and correlational analysis of the responses obtained was done.

Results:

It was discovered that there are certain activities that involve spending time, which are related directly to domestic chores -such as being aware of the pantry, making an inventory of food, writing a shopping-list, among others- and have a relationship with the amount of food that is wasted. In the end, these small activities become smart consumption habits.

Limitations:

A further confirmatory research is needed.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, based on the data obtained through the survey, in this case it is possible to identify such positive correlation.
