MATA SANCHEZ, Gabriela. The luxury of alcohol: the opportunity of the sector in emerging countries. Polít. globalidad. ciudad. [online]. 2022, vol.8, n.16, pp.87-104.  Epub 06-Oct-2023. ISSN 2395-8448.  https://doi.org/10.29105/pgc8.16-5.

In recent decades, the emerging powers have not only been the subject of study in various academic disciplines, but also of desire of companies seeking to increase their sales in new markets with great purchasing power. The sale of alcoholic beverages is an example. Alcohol consumption has grown in emerging countries while improving the quality of life of its inhabitants, a trend that is different in developed countries. The object of this article is to explore the relationship between alcohol consumption and the human development index -HDI in the countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and compare this trend with developed economies. The methodology used was quantitative, based on the construction of a data base with information from 2000 and 2005, obtained from the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Development Programme, as well as conducting Pearson correlation test and linear regressing. The results showed that there is a correlation between these indicators in both groups of the countries, and that, when comparing, the trends were inverse, proving the influence of economic development on the increase in alcohol consumption in emerging countries.

Palabras llave : BRICS; alcohol consumption; economic development; human development; HDI.
