In this programmatical article on intellectual history, I propose to study how the political community was conceived in 16th century New Spain, particularly in two of its forms: the city and the realm. The work program consists of an assessment of the historiography on the subject, a methodological strategy that recovers some assumptions from the so-called history of political languages and a description of the sources that could be used in the research.
