Resumen

CARBAJAL LOPEZ, David. A liturgy of change: The ritual of consecration and coronation of Agustín. Sig. his [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.25, pp.69-99. ISSN 1665-4420.

On July 21st, 1822, the coronation of Emperor Agustín de Iturbide took place, in an original ceremony due to its novelty and the constitutional character of the monarch. Introduced in Hispanic tradition by recent historiography the very same ceremony broke out with it because the main exaltation ritual of the Spanish monarch had been his public entry into the Court, reproduced in America through the proclamation and carrying of the Royal Standard. Additionally, the ritual largely took over the one used by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804, engaging itself in this way with the French tradition of Reims coronation, and particularly copying features that made the distance between the emperor and the clergy To sum up, the ritual's composers gave also the Congress a high exposure, as representative of national sovereignty.

Palabras llave : Liturgy; ceremonies; coronation; First Mexican Empire; Agustín de Iturbide.
