This article addresses some considerations on the theoretical design of a sociology of literature. It focuses on two major dimensions, one epistemological, the other institutional. In the first two sections, both are evaluated from a general overview of the social sciences and humanities. Then, more precise considerations are made about the two dimensions, in their concrete implications for a project on the sociology of literature that genuinely problematizes its theoretical starting points. One of the main observations consists in the recognition of the institutional weakness and conceptual dispersion of this sub-discipline.
