Resumen

PENICHE MORENO, Paola. Matrimonio y transmisión de la propiedad entre los mayas del siglo XIX. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2005, vol.26, pp.127-136. ISSN 0185-2574.

This work has as one of its central objectives to show how the study of the marriage, the property and the inheritance are viable routes to analyze the Mayan kinship in different epochs. The article proposes that marriage can be interpreted as one of the strategies that the peninsular natives used to conserve, reproduce and defend the kin's group property. The analysis is focused on the role that marriage had in the use, possession, property and inheritance of material goods, basically the land, among the Maya of the first half of the 19th century. It is done from the study of the conflicts that occurred around property, since these facts constitute an excellent opportunity to know how kin groups were configured and delimited in social practice. The material is given by a series of disputes about inheritances, whose setting was the verbal judgments that were carried out in the town of Ticul, Yucatan, between 1820 and 1833.
