An innovative displacement based seismic design method for reinforce concrete framed structures is presented. Its formulation is based on the concept of reference system, which relies on the characterization of structural response by the means of the elastic and inelastic properties of the fundamental mode. The method proposed consists in the construction of a bilinear curve of spectral accelerations vs displacements; the yield displacement is defined in consistency with the geometry of the structure and the properties of its components, and the ultimate displacement is limited according to the target drift associated to the limit state considered. The structural elements are designed with the forces obtained from a simplified elastic analysis for the demands defined in such curve.
