Resumen

MORAN FAUNDES, José Manuel. The third neoconservative wave in Latin America: Attacks against sexual and reproductive rights. Iztapalapa. Rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2023, vol.44, n.95, pp.349-376.  Epub 11-Sep-2023. ISSN 2007-9176.  https://doi.org/10.28928/ri/952023/aot9/moranfaundesj.

The literature has identified different waves through which the neoconservative articulation against sexual and reproductive rights (SRR) in Latin America has passed. While in a first stage their organization was founded around a Catholic identity, and their actions were mainly oriented to prevent public debates on abortion, the subsequent opening of debates on SRR enabled a second neoconservative wave. The latter was characterized by a reactive turn, in which Catholic sectors allied with evangelical and secular actors to impact the state arena. At present, renewed characteristics seem to emerge among these actors. Through a qualitative analysis of a base of neoconservative organizations and actors from seven Latin American countries, this article delves into four central dimensions of current neoconservative activism and proposes to understand it as a third wave: its link with extreme right-wing projects, its organization into political parties, its renewed transnational articulations, and the decentralization of its leadership.
