Resumen

CONFINO, Hernán Eduardo. The Montoneros Insurrection (1979-1980). Between Doctrine and Practice. Secuencia [online]. 2023, n.117, e2152.  Epub 17-Ago-2023. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i117.2152.

This article reconstructs the last strategic shift of the Argentinean armed organization, known as the Montoneros, between 1979 and 1980. It proposes a perspective that integrates the leaders’ justifications for adopting this measure with the views of those who participated in it. In a dialogue with transnational history, it links the rhetoric of the leaders, which served as the backdrop to the decision to stage the uprising that proved successful in Nicaragua and Iran in 1979, with other processes occurring in Argentina.

The article uses a range of sources: party documents, edited memoirs, intelligence files and, above all, the testimonials of militants who participated in the process. The main conclusion is that before the Montoneros established links with other foreign actors, other elements intervened in the decision to stage an uprising, associated with the brutal state repression, the exile of many of its members and dissent within the organization.

Palabras llave : Montoneros; armed popular insurrection; exile; counteroffensive; doctrine.
