YANEZ GARCIA, Juan Manuel. The Secularization of the Viceregal Image and Art in the Liberal State Oaxaca in the Mid-19th Century. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2024, n.67, pp.21-45.  Epub 05-Abr-2024. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2024.67.77895.

This article explores the development of an artistic identity in Oaxaca, resulting from the merging of secularized colonial art and academic art during the 19th century. The study focuses on the written work of Oaxacan painter Francisco Bonequi, analyzing it through a theoretical lens that delves into the tension between artistic autonomy and religious symbolism. The distinct pictorial approach of Bonequi, reflecting visual and ethical values of academic art aligned with European aesthetics and the ideological stance of the Mexican liberal State, is examined. The research examines the ideological connections underlying stylistic expressions, revealing that the appropriation of colonial art was not solely driven by conservatism but also aligned with liberal ideology. Ultimately, the article underscores how integrating of local academic art with historical legacies played pivotal role in shaping the artistic identity during the establishment of the secular state in Oaxaca.
