CASTILLO FERNANDEZ, Dídimo. Bioethical dilemmas in clinical practice and chronic pain management. Med. ética [online]. 2023, vol.34, n.3, pp.720-762. Epub 04-Oct-2023. ISSN 2594-2166. https://doi.org/10.36105/mye.2023v34n3.03.
Clinical bioethics has evolved in the affirmation of the fundamental general principles that protect people’s health. The management and relief of pain is a universally recognized human right, susceptible to ethical and bioethical scrutiny, since it involves making decisions that compromise people’s quality of life. The ethical dilemma of pain management often involves conflicts of values in crucial decisions, especially when there is no single alternative, treatment and intervention strategies that are sufficiently shared and accepted. The ethical and bioethical problem in pain management, especially in patients with chronic conditions and/or stress, at the end of life continues to represent a challenge for clinical practice, with diverse consequences in adult patients and repercussions in health systems and the family and social environment of these patients.
