Resumen

GUTIERREZ VARGAS, José Ricardo. Images of Cruelty: Femigenocidal Violence in Mexico through the Gaze of a Scopic, Androcentric/Neoliberal Regime. Debate fem. [online]. 2021, vol.61, pp.46-69.  Epub 10-Mayo-2023. ISSN 2594-066X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cieg.2594066xe.2021.61.2232.

This article proposes a theoretical analysis that addresses the way the production of images involving femigenocidal violence in Mexico serves to mediate a series of social meanings that will be interpreted at the crossroads between neoliberalism and what is postulated as an androcentric scopic regime. It will be argued that this link defines the way these visual images circulate, contributing to the “symbolic undertaking” of femigenocide in Mexico. Lastly, examples of tabloid newspapers where femigenocides are represented will be used to argue that the systematic reiteration of cruelty is not only a sensationalist display of women’s broken bodies but also the expression of a cruel gesture: the visual display through which the annihilation of the idea of community is announced through an extractivism (of resources and bodies) that defines the contemporary neoliberal spirit.

Palabras llave : Image; Femigenocide; Neoliberalism; Scopic regime.
