Introduction and aims:

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated a change in the practice of endoscopy due to the inherent generation of aerosols from the procedure. Several organizations have issued recommendations to decrease the risk of infection in endoscopists. The main objective was to determine the changes in the practice of endoscopy in Mexico, as well as to know the personal protective equipment (PPE) used and the procedures that were given priority.

Materials and methods:

A survey was carried out from March 22 to 29, 2020 in the Google Forms format, which was sent personally and through social networks to endoscopists in Mexico.

Results:

77 questionnaire responses were taken into account, of which 79.2% had had a change in the strategy for performing endoscopic procedures, performing only urgent and emerging procedures; it was observed that the majority did not have the complete PPE attached to international recommendations; priority was given to life-threatening conditions.

Conclusions:

This disease has generated a change in the strategy for conducting endoscopic studies in our country, prioritizing life-threatening conditions, in accordance with international recommendations, and reprogramming those with cough and fever, mainly. It was also observed that the majority of endoscopists did not have a complete PPE, however the survey was carried out at the beginning of this contingency.
