ESTRADA-FLORES, S. et al. Synthesis of TiO2 mesoporous particles and kinetic study of the methylene blue photodegradation. RIIIT. Rev. int. investig. innov. tecnol. [online]. 2020, vol.7, n.42, pp.22-34. Epub 05-Feb-2021. ISSN 2007-9753.
Nowadays, titanium oxide (TiO2) is commonly used in photocatalysis process for wastewater treatment, however, the optical and textural properties of this material can be yet improved in order to make more efficient the photocatalysis. For that reason, in this work the synthesis of TiO2 was made by a sol-gel method assisted with the use of a surfactant; also, the conditions for the photodecoloration of methylene blue, such as pH and concentration of the photocatalyst were investigated. The results show that the product corresponds to an anatase sample with hydroxylated surface, this sample has a specific surface area of 90.37 m2/g and presents mesoporosity. The band gap of the material was 2.88 eV, which is lower than the commercial TiO2 P25. The photodecoloration tests under UV light indicate that the best conditions for the photocatalysis process using the TiO2 sample are a concentration of 2 g/L and a pH of 8, with a 100 % of dye degradation in 30 minutes. The kinetics of methylene blue photodecoloration was of first order for all pH values and catalyst concentrations used. The percentage of photodecoloration of methylene blue at 45 minutes of irradiation with UV light (100 %) is greater than the percentage of discoloration obtained with visible light (57 %).
