Resumen

CHAY-CANUL, Alfonso J. et al. Productivity of Pelibuey and Katahdin ewes in the humid tropics. Ecosistemas y recur. agropecuarios [online]. 2019, vol.6, n.16, pp.159-165.  Epub 01-Oct-2019. ISSN 2007-901X.  https://doi.org/10.19136/era.a6n16.1872.

The objective of the study was to evaluate productivity variables in the preweaning period of Pelibuey (n = 28) and Katahdin (n = 21) ewes kept under humid tropic production conditions. The ewes were placed together with their offspring in individual pens from lambing to weaning. Preweaning dry matter consumption (DMC) and weaning productivity did not differ (p > 0.05) between breeds, but the Pelibuey ewes had greater (p < 0.05) weight loss than the Katahdin ewes (-3.01 vs 0.76 kg). Double-birth ewes showed greater (p < 0.05) weight loss (0.46 kg vs. -2.70 kg), preweaning DMC (1.91 vs 2.17 kg day-1) and weaning productivity. The weaning productivity of the Pelibuey and Katahdin ewes is similar under humid tropic conditions, although the Pelibuey ewes lost more weight. The number of lambs at birth improved productivity in Pelibuey and Katahdin ewes.
