Resumen

ARGUETA PEREZ-CORONADO, Inés. “Natural” family against egalitarian marriage: a recurring social phenomenon. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2017, vol.11, n.22, pp.278-311. ISSN 2007-8110.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a protest movement in France which took place during the debate on same sex marriage in 2012-2013. The protest movement was known as the “Manif pour tous”; it defined itself as non-religious, non-affiliated to any political party and against homophobia movement. Its discourse against same sex marriage focused on the defense of a “natural” conception of the family model, pretending that their view on this matter represented the whole of French society. The analysis offered by this paper focused on the media campaign of this movement, through its website and it twitter account. The analytic framework is based on the Frankfurt School and mediacultures (Macé, 2006) to show how the ‘Manif pour tous’ positioned itself in the debate to defend its conception of the family as universally valid. Moscovici’s theory of social representation (1976) and Jodelet’s contributions (2011) helped us understand how this movement built its discourse, in which some actors were legitimated while some others were excluded.
