Resumen

PINEDA-MARTINEZ, L. F.; LEON-CRUZ, J.F.  y  CARBAJAL, N.. Analysis of severe storms and tornado formation in the northern region of Mexico. Revista bio ciencias [online]. 2020, vol.7, e885.  Epub 18-Nov-2020. ISSN 2007-3380.  https://doi.org/10.15741/revbio.07.e885.

This work presents an analysis of extreme rainfall and its trends for the northern region of Mexico. Based on one-day and five-day maximum rainfall events, the sites with the highest incidence of severe storms can be estimated and related to a tornadoes database. The northern and northwestern regions of Mexico are characterized by their high influence of monsoon summer rains, this generates days with heavy rains as storms with more than 20 mm/day. However, the report of tornadoes in that region is relatively low with respect to the central and southeastern zones of the country. App lying the indexes of the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) for climatic stations of the National Meteorological Service, homogeneously distributed in northern Mexico, the indexes were calculated for days with intense precipitation RX1day, RX5day, R95P and SDII. Additionally, an analysis of the spatial-temporal variation of instability zones is performed based on K and Gálvez-Davison indexes. The main objective was to associate events of extreme rain with tornadic activity, and where appropriate, observe favorable conditions for the development of tornadoes in that region, and in this way, obtain conjectures if this ‘gap’ in the information is mostly associated to the lack of reports.
