ALARCON PARDO, Alejandro. Partial Leucism in a giant coot, Fulica gigantea, in Junín, Perú. Huitzil [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.2, e590. Epub 17-Oct-2022. ISSN 1870-7459. https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2020.21.2.452.
Leucism is the result of a genetic mutation that affects the transfer and deposition of melanin in feathers. It has been observed in various species, and more commonly observed in the neotropics over the last two decades. In this note I describe an observation of leucism in a giant coot, Fulica gigantea, at lake Aguascocha, in Junín, Perú. The coot was observed on 26 March 2016. Additional observation and study will aid our ability to determine the prevalence of leucism in wild bird populations.
