Resumen
TAYLOR HANSEN, Lawrence Douglas. La riqueza escondida en el desierto: la búsqueda de metales preciosos en el noroeste de Sonora durante los siglos XVIII y XIX. Región y sociedad [online]. 2008, vol.20, n.42, pp.165-190. ISSN 2448-4849.
The mining of gold and silver deposits in the northwestern region of Sonora, which began with important discoveries during the eighteenth century continued to play a significant role in the regional economy throughout the nineteenth century. This continuity was due, in part, to new mineral discoveries, particularly in the Papaguería region (1834-1844), as well as the resurgence of some of the older sites, such as La Cieneguilla and San Francisco de Asís. Considering the period as a whole, the quantity of precious metals produced -particularly gold- was considerable. Mining activities also helped to stimulate commerce, as well as increase the population of Altar, Caborca and Sonoita, which became important regional centers.
