Resumen

SANCHEZ GONZALEZ, Karen Estefanía. Determining Factors for Wage Levels in Mexico’s Terminal Automobile Industry. Norteamérica [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.1, pp.217-242.  Epub 12-Ene-2024. ISSN 2448-7228.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cisan.24487228e.2023.1.599.

This article analyzes the establishment stage, the destination region, country of origin, and the specific union as factors that determine the comprehensive annual yearly wage of unionized workers. To do that, the authors look at the 2019 collective bargaining agreements for twenty auto assembly companies, using a Kruskal Wallis analysis and Dunn-Bonferroni tests to determine if wage differences existed. They found that, starting with the third stage of establishment, wages decreased; the central and northern regions had higher wages, while those in the western and central-northern regions were lower. Regarding country of origin, European firms offered high wages, and Asian-owned firms, lower ones. Workers who were members of the Federation of Unions of Goods and Services Companies (Federación de Sindicatos de Empresas de Bienes y Servicios, or FESEBS) earned higher wages, and the wages of those in the National Federation of Independent Unions (Federación Nacional de Sindicatos Independientes, or FNSI) were lower.

Palabras llave : wages; auto industry; Mexico; unions.
