The article proposes a theoretical framework for understanding the diaristic writing of Fernando Pessoa and Franz Kafka, starting from the conceptualisation of western modernity and moving on to a critical discussion of the poetic capacities of autobiography. Although their obvious differences are acknowledged, it is proposed that a link between both writings is the feeling of foreignness experienced as an inner exile as a result of phenomena that, among others, have to do with multiculturalism or polyglossia.
