Resumen

PEREZ-PEREZ, Eliezer Fernando  y  VILLAFUERTE-SOLIS, Daniel. Effects of Deregulated Markets on Coffee Peasants in the Los Altos Region of Chiapas: The Case of UCIPA. LiminaR [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.134-149. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v16i1.569.

This article analyzes the impact of unregulated markets on coffee production and marketing by peasant coffee growers of the Union of Indigenous Agricultural Producer Communities of Santa Catarina, Pantelhó (UCIPA), in the highland region of Chiapas. In 2000, contrary to normal practices of organic-coffee producers, the organization decided to enter the conventional coffee market. Our investigation is the result of a wider study based on field information that allows us to reflect on the current situation and future prospects in the context of an economy based on neoliberal rationality, with little government regulation. The article highlights the strategies that peasants have adopted in overcoming the difficulties imposed by the market and the effects of climate change, a consequence of which is the proliferation of the coffee-rust pest.
