Resumen

CARRADA-BRAVO, Teodoro. Facial sporotrichosis in chilhood: clinical and laboratory diagnosis, treatments and review. Bol. Med. Hosp. Infant. Mex. [online]. 2005, vol.62, n.3, pp.207-213. ISSN 1665-1146.

Introduction. Sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection caused by a dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii found in soil. Although facial cutaneous lesions in children are usually painless, relentless progression with scarring results if the infection is left untreated. Children usually presented to the dermatology clinic with solitary ulcerative or nodular lesions which have been misdiagnosed for months as bacterial infections, tinea or insect bites. Case reports. We report 5 children with facial sporotrichosis who were misdiagnosed because they had solitary ulcers, verrucous plaques or nodes. All had positive cultures for S. schenckii and were treated with saturated solution of potassium iodide. Conclusions. Sporotrichosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of localized, chronic crusted papule, papuloulcerative, verrucous or nodular facial lesions, resistant to initial antibiotic therapy. Culturing exudates on Saboureaud glucose-agar usually yields the causative S. schenckii.
