In 1994, Joaquín Galarza entrusted me a detailed iconographical study and interpretation of the Map of Otumba, a sixteenth-century pictographical manuscript which represents some places near Otumba (Mexico). Detailed analysis of the document, by using the Galarza's method, showed it to be extremely rich. I could establish that the map represents a small portion of the pre-Conquest altepetl of Otompan (Otumba) and its Early Colonial period administrative successors, the parroquia and corregimiento.Analysis of the elements of the document reveals its temporal and spatial settings; it also throws light on the changes in indigenous sociopolitical and religious organization during the first half-century of the Early Colonial period.
