BECERRA PEDRAZA, Itzel; VAZQUEZ GARCIA, Verónica y ZAPATA MARTELO, Emma. Género, etnia y edad en el trabajo agrícola infantil. Estudio de caso, Sinaloa, México. La ventana [online]. 2007, vol.3, n.26, pp.101-124. ISSN 1405-9436.
More than three million children work for wages in Mexico, many of them in agriculture for exportation. This paper analyzes children’s work at Agroexportalizas Mexicanas, S. A. de C. V., one of the most important companies in the field, which has operated in the state of Sinaloa since the mid-sixties. The paper focuses on three issues: segregation patterns by gender, ethnicity and age; the girl’s double burden; and children’s use of time after work. It concludes that the gender division of labor, a social construction which is oppressive for women, is reproduced both in the kind of work that children perform and in their appropriation of space for recreation after work.
