VILLAVICENCIO-MARQUEZ, María De Los Ángeles; GARCIA-GONZALEZ, Juan Manuel; CONEJO-FLORES, Ricardo  y  ALMEIDA-ESCALANTE, Omayra. Study of aqueous polymer solutions for carbon dioxide absorption. Ing. invest. y tecnol. [online]. 2018, vol.19, n.4, e037. ISSN 2594-0732.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fi.25940732e.2018.19n4.037.

The objective of the present investigation is to evaluate the absorption of CO2 in an aqueous solution of chitosan and ionic liquids. To achieve the proposed goal, aqueous solutions of 30% MEA are prepared, with 0.5% and 3.0% chitosan, and chitosan solutions are also prepared with ionic liquids, such as; 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide; eutectic ionic liquid with and without Li2O; and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide. The experimentation is carried out in a stainless steel cell where the absorber and a direct gas stream are placed, both are mixed at 300 rpm and temperature of 30 °C until reaching equilibrium. In addition, for the evaluation to be efficient, the pressure (1 to 6 atm) and the concentration of the chitosan in the solution are modified to determine the CO2 absorption capacity. When analyzing the results, it is found that of the prepared solutions the absorbs a greater amount of CO2 is 0.5% of chitosan, however the speed of absorption is slow. It is also observed that the absorption capacity of the solutions increases with the pressure. Finally, the property with the greatest effect on mass transfer is viscosity. It can be concluded that the efficiency in the absorption capacity increases as the amount of chitosan in the solutions decreases. In addition, 3% and 0.5% chitosan solutions show a better absorption capacity than ionic liquids. The maximum absorption capacity that was obtained in ionic liquids was for the case of the eutectic at 30% and 3 atm. The pKa value of the anionic acid of the ionic liquid plays an important role in the CO2 absorption capacity, the higher the pKa value, the greater the capture capacity.
