SENDON, María Alejandra. The Trajectories of Secondary School Graduates in a Changed Society. RMIE [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.24, pp.191-219. ISSN 1405-6666.
The profound social transformations of recent times in Argentina have had a considerable effect on the labor market and its relationship with education. The conjunction of scarce, vulnerable employment and educational expansion makes secondary school insufficient for guaranteeing access to work and permitting social improvement, as in the past. In this framework, important transformations have occurred in the educational and employment trajectories of secondary school graduates. This article addresses such transformations and their role in the choices and orientations of young people on completing secondary school. The study is based on data compiled by following a group of students who graduated from secondary school in 1999. By using this information, the paper delineates novel trends in current post-secondary trajectories; it also analyzes certain biographical aspects of the graduates’ educational and school history-aspects of relevance in constructing their trajectories.
