Resumen

MUNOZ-ARMENTA, Aldo; HERAS-GOMEZ, Leticia  y  PULIDO-GOMEZ, Amalia. An approach to political party membership in Mexico: the case of emergent parties. Convergencia [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.63, pp.177-205. ISSN 2448-5799.

The purpose of this article is to examine the political party membership in Mexico. The analysis focuses particularly on four of the emergent parties: Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM), PT (Partido del Trabajo), Convergencia (since July 31st 2011 changed its name to Movimiento Ciudadano) and Partido Nueva Alianza (PANAL). The approach will be helpful to identify the motivations that most citizens would have in order to become members of said political parties, even if they do not obtain any payment. Under that purpose a survey was made in five Mexican states: Estado de México, Jalisco, Veracruz and Michoacan and also in Distrito Federal, from which we could make some documented inferences, discovering that party membership work in new political parties is given mostly by material incentives and to a lesser extent by ideological motivations, which also may explain individual timing and ongoing changes among parties. In Mexico public budgeting for political parties can give the explanation of why they actually need less party membership labor, although this cannot explain individual behavior.

Palabras llave : political party; political membership; incentive; emergent political party.
