Recent literature on competitiveness points to the importance of technological innovation in sustaining economic growth and social welfare. This study explores factors associated with the structure and innovative behavior that significantly explain the export conduct of a group of manufacturing establishments located in the state of Guanajuato (Mexico). The general model shows that export probability appears to be associated with most of the variables that show innovative behavior. Moreover, two models have been estimated according to the company size. The profile of the export company described here is drawn, above all, with relation to the PYMES. The different effects that are found may be due to an interaction between domestic capacities and the level of demand of the target market.
