BRIONES GARDUNO, Jesús Carlos et al. Microbiological results: experience in an obstetric critical care unit. Rev. Asoc. Mex. Med. Crít. Ter. Intensiva [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.4, pp.209-213. ISSN 0187-8433.

Background: Sepsis is the systemic inflammatory response to infection and represents an important challenge for diagnostic and treatment issues in obstetric patients that in some cases could progress to septic shock and multiorgan dysfunction with maternal fetal mortality of 27-59%. The objective is describe the microbiological profile since cultures obtained in Critical Care in Obstetrics of Hospital General de México "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga" during June 2014 01-January 01 2015 period. Material and methods: 180 patients were admitted, age media of 29 years, 93 (52%) because of severe preeclampsia, 37 (21%) obstetric haemorrhage, 36 (20%) obstetric sepsis and 14 (7%) with other diagnoses. Results: 323 cultures were requested, 221 (68%) without microbiological growth. The main isolation site was the urinary tract (33%), with Escherichia coli (64%), on its behalf Staphylococcus aureus was related to one third to respiratory infections and bacteremias. The administration of cephalosporins, quinolones, aminoglycosides and even piperacillin/tazobactam is not recommended as first choice due to the high resistance (all of them higher than 50%). Discussion and conclusion: This study contributes novel information about the microbiological profile in Critical Care in Obstetrics Unit, scarce information nowadays.
