GUZMAN TOVAR, César. Experiences of Acceleration among Latin American Social Researchers. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2019, vol.34, n.97, pp.115-144. Epub 25-Ene-2020. ISSN 2007-8358.
The speed-up of the pace of life seems to be an undisputable trait of contemporary Western societies. This acceleration can be identified in different social activities like sports, fashion, virtual interactions, shopping, services, etc. Science, as one more social space among the rest, does not seem to escape from this. Based on in-depth interviews, this article looks at acceleration as a category of analysis that explains the scientific practices of male and female researchers in Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. The author concludes that social acceleration is manifested in the fields of science along with slow-down, identified in certain scientific rituals that make it possible to counter the blistering rhythms of institutional demands.
