Resumen

PEREZ CONTRERAS, Aníbal  y  LUJAN VERON, David. Proximity, Favor, Loyalty. Patronage System in Two Chilean Municipalities. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2018, vol.33, n.94, pp.235-268. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article compares two finished research projects that analyzed the construction of political leadership by two women mayors linked to the Independent Democratic Union (UDI). The authors’ hypothesis states that to a large degree, the fact that they continue in their posts can be explained by their effective structuring of patronage or clientelist relations with their social base. From there, the article establishes certain patterns that characterize their work in both contexts, emphasizing the mechanisms of linking the municipal government with neighborhood organizations. In their conclusions, the authors invite the reader to think about the link between right-wing clientelism and political culture in contemporary Chile.

Palabras llave : clientelism; patronage system; intermediation; local government; Lavinism; political right-wing.
