GUTIERREZ SANCHEZ, Héctor. Good Citizens Who Don’t Vote. Mechanisms between Disillusionment and Abstention. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.92, pp.141-173. ISSN 2007-8358.
Many studies suggest that political disillusionment can cause electoral abstentionism in Mexico, but without presenting any empirical proof. Using interviews and a statistically analyzed survey, the author found that disillusionment and participation are indeed linked, but in a complex way. When people trust politicians, they vote a great deal, but when they do not, they act in one of two ways: they either abstain in order to refrain from participating in the negative things the candidates will do, or they vote to fulfill their civic duty and then blame the politicians for not doing their part for the good of Mexico.
Palabras llave : abstentionism; disillusionment; electoral participation.
