Resumen

QUIROZ, Enriqueta. Circulation and Consumption of Cacao in Mexico City in the 18th Century. Secuencia [online]. 2014, n.88, pp.37-64. ISSN 2395-8464.

The article describes the importance of cacao consumption in Mexico City in the 18th century. It defines the scope of its trade, and calculates the volume of cacao admitted to the capital, as well as mentioning the main circuitry through which it is supplied. It also perceives the friction created in supplying cacao for Mexico City, to such an extent that it competed with the demand from Atlantic markets. The study explores Mexico City's integration with the rest of the local markets and Central and South America. The description of those interconnections makes it possible to visualize the integration of Hispanic markets based on the demand for large urban centers such as the capital of New Spain.

Palabras llave : Cacao; chocolate; consumption; Mexico City; Caracas; Maracaibo; Trinidad; Guayaquil; Tabasco; Guatemala; Soconusco.
